Transportation Supervisor – Marion City Schools




Has responsibility for the effective operation of the department. Is expected to create a shared vision and clear goals for their department and maintain a positive climate; employ effective decision-making skills; manage and allocate resources to support critical work priorities; develop the effectiveness of staff and engage in varied two-way communication with students, district staff, parents and community.


Performance Responsibilities:


Directs and coordinates all transportation operations for the district; supervises all transportation personnel; interacts with all building principals and district staff; ensures the maintenance and operation of all transportation equipment (buses, vans, etc.) for the district.


Elements of Each Standard

  1. Ensuring High Levels of Staff Performance:

o             Lead selection, hiring of qualified drivers, placement and performance of staff including making contract recommendations when appropriate

o             Conducts professional development and training for all department employees

o             Recruits and maintains a list of substitute drivers and utilizes substitutes as needed

o             Evaluates all staff and makes recommendations for continued employment in the district

  1. Resource Management:

o             Maintains all records and state reports for district fleet of buses and drivers

o             Annually prepares a time schedule and bus routes for all district and parochial schools; maintains a map for each school with pick-up points clearly delineated; works with district administrators to adjust schedules for weather emergencies, etc.

o             Maintains an up to date list of students transported on each bus and adjusts routes or schedules based on numbers of students being served

o             Oversees and is accountable for the operation and use of all buses in the district fleet as well as operating resources such as tools, parts, gasoline, etc.

o             Evaluate and approve timesheets in accordance with negotiated agreement

o             Budget and manage department resources in a manner which allows for the effective and efficient operation of the department

  1. Safety:

o             Provides training and ensures staff follows proper safety policies and procedures established by the district, the Ohio Department of Education, and the State Highway Patrol

o             Ensures that all buses are safe and in good mechanical condition; regularly inspects buses for safety and maintenance throughout the school year

o             Oversees security cameras for buses to ensure safety as the top priority for the district; coordinates student bus-related discipline issues with the driver and respective school administrator

o             Continually keeps abreast of changes and improvements in the transportation system that will contribute to greater safety

  1. Communication:

o             Effectively communicates with transportation staff to ensure high levels of service

o             Directs all communication with parents and community regarding bus routes, times, stops, etc.

o             Communicates with district staff regarding scheduling of field trips and athletic events

o             Maintains open lines of communication with district administrators to ensure transportation systems operate effectively

o             Receives all phone calls/emails from the public pertaining to bus routing, pick-up points, and transportation problems

o             Works actively with parents and staff to effectively resolve issues and concerns

  1. Policy adherence:

o             Ensure the department compliance with all applicable board policies and guidelines

o             Administer the transportation department in accordance with the collective bargaining    agreement

o             Ensure compliance for the district with all applicable policies given by the Ohio Department of

o             Education, the Ohio Revised Code, and the State Highway Patrol.


Experience Required:

High school diploma, knowledge of transportation routing software.

Good technical skills and working knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to Ohio School Bus Transportation.                                                         Previous managerial or supervisor experience.

Class B CDL and School Bus Endorsement (preferred)


Wage or Salary: Salary Based on Experience Approximate Work Hours or Days: 260 Days
